Short answer: Odoo handles hospital billing by treating every service, procedure, room-day and medicine as a product with a price list. Each patient visit becomes a bill; deposits are recorded as advance payments; panel and insurance shares are invoiced to the payer on credit terms with ageing; packages bundle procedures at a fixed price; and doctor shares are computed from billed lines. Everything posts straight to accounting.

Odoo for Hospital Billing and Invoicing
Panels, packages, deposits and doctor shares — how each one maps to Odoo, and what needs configuration versus customisation.

Hospital billing is where revenue is either captured or quietly lost. A service given in the ward but never entered, a panel claim never submitted, a deposit never adjusted — each is small, and together they are often the difference between a profitable month and a loss. This page shows how each billing situation is handled in Odoo.
How does Odoo handle hospital billing?
| Billing need | How Odoo handles it | Standard or custom? |
|---|---|---|
| Service catalogue (consultations, tests, procedures, room-days) | Each is a service product with a code and price | Standard |
| Different rates for cash, panel, insurer, staff | Price lists per customer type | Standard |
| OPD bill at the counter | Point of Sale or quick invoice, cash/card | Standard |
| IPD running bill | Lines accumulate on an open order, invoiced at discharge | Configuration |
| Admission deposit | Advance payment, auto-reconciled at final bill | Standard |
| Panel/insurance split | Patient share invoiced to patient, rest to payer | Usually light customisation |
| Procedure packages | Bundled product at a fixed price; extras billed outside the package | Configuration |
| Doctor shares | Percentage or fixed amount per billed line, paid as vendor bills | Usually light customisation |
| Medicines on the bill | Issued from pharmacy stock with lot/expiry, priced from price list | Standard |
| Claim follow-up | Payer receivables, credit terms, ageing report | Standard |
How do panel and insurance bills work?
Corporate panels and insurers are customers with credit terms. At discharge, the bill splits into two invoices: the patient's share (co-pay, non-covered items) and the payer's share. Payer invoices are batched monthly per panel, and the receivables ageing report shows exactly which panel owes what, for how long. Most hospitals find money here in the first month — claims that were never sent.
How are doctor shares calculated?
Each consultant is set up with a share rule — a percentage of specific services, or a fixed amount per procedure. When a bill is validated, the share is computed from its lines. At month-end, shares become vendor bills for each doctor, with a statement they can check line by line. The monthly argument about "what was my share?" ends because both sides look at the same lines.
Odoo billing flow for an admitted patient
- Admission — patient registered, deposit received and recorded as an advance.
- Stay — room-days, procedures, tests and medicines added to the running bill as they happen.
- Discharge — bill reviewed; package and panel rules applied; deposit adjusted.
- Invoices — patient share settled at the counter; payer share added to the panel batch.
- Accounting — revenue by department, receivables by payer, doctor shares accrued — automatically.
Where integration matters. If doctors order services in a separate HMIS, those orders must flow into Odoo as bill lines automatically. A billing clerk re-typing orders from another screen is exactly where services go unbilled. Agree who builds and maintains that link before you start.
What reports does hospital billing in Odoo give you?
- Revenue by department, by doctor and by payer
- Panel receivables ageing (30/60/90+ days)
- Unbilled admissions — patients with services but no final bill
- Doctor share statements
- Daily cash closing per counter
