Short answer: Hospital ERP software runs the business side of a hospital: patient billing and panel/insurance receivables, pharmacy and consumables stock with batch and expiry tracking, procurement, doctor and staff payroll, and finance. It is different from an HMIS/EMR, which holds clinical records. Most Pakistani hospitals need both, connected — so a patient's services flow automatically into a bill, and every bill into the ledger.

Hospital ERP Software in Pakistan — What It Must Cover
The eight areas a hospital ERP has to handle, where hospitals lose money without it, and how it fits alongside clinical software.
By Pearl Solutions · Updated October 2026 · 9 min read
A hospital is two organisations sharing one building. One treats patients. The other buys medicines, pays doctors, bills panels and insurers, and closes the books. Clinical software serves the first. Hospital ERP serves the second — and in most Pakistani hospitals the second is still run on a billing counter program, a pharmacy register and Excel.
What is hospital ERP software?
Hospital ERP is one system for the money, stock and people of a hospital: patient billing, receivables from panels and insurers, pharmacy and store inventory, purchasing, payroll (including doctor shares) and accounting. It is not an electronic medical record. The best set-up is an ERP and a clinical system that talk to each other, so nothing is typed twice.
HMIS vs hospital ERP — what is the difference?
| HMIS / EMR (clinical) | Hospital ERP (business) | |
|---|---|---|
| Main user | Doctors, nurses, lab | Billing, pharmacy, stores, finance, HR |
| Core record | Patient chart, orders, results | Invoice, stock move, purchase, journal entry |
| Key question | "What happened to this patient?" | "What did it cost, who pays, is it collected?" |
| Failure looks like | Missing clinical history | Unbilled services, expired stock, unpaid panel claims |
What must hospital ERP software cover?
| Area | What it must do | Where money leaks without it |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Patient billing | OPD, IPD, ER, procedure and package billing; deposits and refunds | Services delivered but never billed |
| 2. Panel & insurance | Corporate panels, insurers, credit limits, claim batches, ageing | Claims sitting unsubmitted for months |
| 3. Pharmacy | Batch and expiry, FEFO issue, ward/OT issues, retail counter | Expired stock write-offs, pilferage |
| 4. Stores & consumables | Reorder points, department issues, cost per patient/procedure | No idea what a procedure really costs |
| 5. Procurement | Requisition → approval → PO → GRN → vendor bill matching | Paying for goods never received |
| 6. Doctor shares | Consultant percentage or fixed share computed from billed services | Monthly disputes, manual calculation |
| 7. HR & payroll | Shifts, rosters, attendance, payroll | Overtime that nobody can verify |
| 8. Finance | Department-wise P&L, cash control, tax, audit trail | Month-end that takes three weeks |
Can Odoo be used for a hospital?
Yes — for the business side. Odoo's standard Accounting, Invoicing, Inventory, Purchase, Point of Sale, Employees and Payroll apps cover areas 1–8 above with configuration: pharmacy runs on Inventory with lot and expiry tracking, panel receivables on customer credit terms and ageing, and the pharmacy counter on Point of Sale. Odoo does not ship a clinical EMR. Clinical records either stay in your existing HMIS, connected to Odoo, or are added through custom modules. Be wary of any vendor who says one product does both perfectly out of the box. (Payroll is an Odoo Enterprise app — confirm the edition before you plan around it.)
What does hospital ERP look like at different sizes?
| Facility | Typical scope |
|---|---|
| Clinic / diagnostic centre | Billing, POS pharmacy, inventory, accounting — see clinic and diagnostic centre ERP |
| 50–150 bed hospital | All eight areas, panel billing, doctor shares, 1 pharmacy + stores |
| Multi-site group | All of the above + inter-branch stock transfers, consolidated finance |
How to choose hospital ERP software in Pakistan
- Ask for the bill. Have the vendor show an IPD discharge bill with a panel split — patient share, panel share, deposit adjusted.
- Ask for expiry. Show the report of medicines expiring in 90 days, by store.
- Ask for the doctor share. Show last month's consultant share computed from billed services.
- Ask for the integration. If you keep your HMIS, how do services become bill lines — and who maintains that link?
- Ask about Urdu-speaking support for billing and pharmacy staff on night shifts.
